The photo below shows all the items included in the complete 2-function joystick kit for a John Deere 4000 series tractor. This kit replaces John Deere part number BWA1073. While there are variations in the cable length, power beyond (manifold) block, valve hydraulic setup (open center, closed center, or pby), mounting brackets, and hydraulic hose lengths depending on which tractor the specific kit is designed for, each kit contains the same type of components shown here.
The pictures below show close-ups of the main components included in each joystick kit.
Joystick
This is the 2-spool joystick. The control cables attach to an internal pivoting piece inside the base of the joystick. The modular design of the joystick allows internal parts to be easily replaced. While the joystick is high quality and can be expected to last for years, the pivot pieces do take a lot of stress and tend to wear out over time. We carry the replacement joystick parts so you don't need to buy a whole new joystick when the high-stress parts wear out.
The 3-function joystick control has two buttons on the joystick handle. The buttons open and close the grapple, and are connected to the control valve with a wiring harness.
Loader Control Valve
This is the 2-spool loader control valve. Both functions are manual, meaning they are controlled by cables that are moved back and forth by a joystick handle. Both the loader and the bucket are able to be used at the same time. The hydraulic valve in each kit is designed to match the hydraulic setup of the tractor the kit is designed for. The available hydraulic setups are: Open Center, Closed Center, and Power Beyond. This kit is designed for farm tractors. Most farm tractors do not have open center hydraulics, as open center hydraulics are almost only ever used with compact and utility tractors. In the farm tractor category, most tractors built since the 1990's are set up with load sense hydraulics. This means the hydraulics only kick in full-force when the front end loader, power steering, or 3-point hitch or any other hydraulic attachment is being used. The hydraulic valve needs to be designed to handle the load sense setup, because it needs to be able to detect when the hydraulics need to kick in (it does this via a special "load sense" port which is activated when you start to move the joystick). Most John Deere farm tractors built from the 1970s until the 1990s are set up with Closed Center hydraulics, which means the hydraulic pump is running full-blast all the time, even if the tractor's hydraulics aren't being used. When the hydraulics are not being used, the oil "dead-heads," which means despite the pressure, the hydraulic oil is blocked. The control valve needs to be designed for Closed Center hydraulics for these tractors, because it needs a way to block the constantly pressurized oil when the front end loader is not being used.
This is the 3-function hydraulic control valve. This control valve block has two manual, cable-operated spool for operating the loader and bucket, and one electric spool for controlling the grapple.
The joystick cables which are installed in the base of the joystick control lever go down through the floor of the tractor cab to be attached to the midmount control valve. The tip of the cable with a ball attaches to the joystick. The threaded tip attaches to the hydraulic valve spools with cable connection hardware.
The cable connection hardware, which is included in the joystick kit, includes the pieces needed to connect the inner cable and the outside cable sheath to the control valve.
This shows the cable connection hardware installed, attaching the joystick cables to the hydraulic midmount valve:
The wiring harness connects the buttons in the joystick included with the 3-function joystick kit to the electric spool on the loader control valve to open and close the grapple.
The complete joystick kit includes a way to tap into the tractor's hydraulics, leaving the rear remotes free. With a PBY block installed, the selector control valves (SCVs) can be used for implements. Typically a power beyond block (sometimes called the manifold block) is the method for tapping into the tractor's pressure, return, and load sense and supplying those oil lines to the midmount loader control valve block. For several tractors, the ports for accessing the pressure, return, and load sense are already built in, and in that case the complete joystick kit includes hoses and fittings for attaching to these existing ports. In one John Deere tractor series, the pressure and return are tapped into via a tee, and the items needed to do so are included in the kit. The power beyond block is included in the joystick kits designed for the tractors that require this for accessing the hydraulics. Below are pictures of the various tractor-specific power beyond blocks included in the various joystick kits:

The joystick kit for the John Deere 4040 tractor model has the exact same setup as the above pictures, except for the power beyond block. The power beyond block for the JD 4040 is shown below:
John Deere 4020 tractors built before 1968 are designed differently than the rest of the 4000 series tractors on how the pressure and return on the tractor are accessed. A power beyond block is not used on these tractors. For any pre-1968 model 4020 tractors, the pressure is teed into by the clutch housing, and the return hose is attached to a port on the filter housing. If the existing filter housing does not have a port, it can be replaced with John Deere cover, part number T31170, and John Deere bolt, part number R65904. If you are ordering a joystick kit for a pre-1968 John Deere 4020 tractor, you do not need the power beyond block. Call 605-951-0167 to place an order for the joystick kit minus the power beyond block. The pictures below show what the pre-1968 model 4020 tractor looks like from the rear, as well as how the pressure and return are tapped into:
