Peracetic Acid MSDS
What is Peracetic Acid?
Peracetic Acid is a colorless liquid with an odor similar to acetic acid. It can be highly corrosive. It is used as a bleaching agent, disinfectant especially in food processing, and as a weakly acidic reagent. Peracetic Acid is a strong oxidizing agent. Peracetic Acid is often used as a bleach alternative to chlorine dioxide and chlorine, but it is relatively expensive and harder to store due to its high reactivity. Peracetic Acid is very toxic to aquatic life and leaves long-lasting damage.
Peracetic Acid Exposure and Health Risks
Peracetic Acid is toxic if swallowed, inhaled, or directly contacted. It can be lethal with as little as a teaspoon of liquid. Ingestion will lead to burning and corrosion of mucous membranes of mouth, throat, and esophagus, with difficulty swallowing and immediate pain. It can also irritate the gastrointestinal tract. If contacted, peracetic acid will cause serious burns, blisters, and pain as well as eye damage. Inhalation will cause respiratory irritation, labored breathing, shortness of breath, and a sore throat.
