What is DEHA?

DEHA is an organic compound used primarily as an oxygen scavenger in water treatment systems. Dissolved oxygen in boiler system water causes corrosion and pitting of metal surfaces, which can lead to boiler inefficiency, equipment failure, and system downtime. DEHA is added to boiler system water as an oxygen scavenger to keep the dissolved oxygen levels as low as possible. It is a colorless liquid but is usually encountered as a solution. It is quite volatile and has a low rate of reaction at low temperatures and pressures. It is a flammable liquid and vapor. It reacts with ferrous metals to form a passivized film of magnetite throughout the boiler system. It is also used for polymerization inhibition, color stabilization for photography, corrosion inhibition, and discoloration inhibition for phenolics.

DEHA Exposure and Health Risks

DEHA is harmful through inhalation, ingestion, and contact. It will cause skin, eye, and respiratory tract irritation. There is significant risk of pulmonary edema and bronchospasm. In the case of over-exposure, it is important to monitor cardiac rhythms. Seizures are also possible side effects. DEHA is suspected to cause organ damage as well as damage the reproductive system. DEHA is toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects.


There are no listed regulations or restrictions for DEHA concentration in water.

Dissolved DEHA concentration in water can be measured in units of parts per million (ppm) or parts per billion (ppb). We carry kits from CHEMetrics that determine DEHA levels in water from 0-400 & 400-3000 ppb and 25-250 ppm. All of our DEHA products can be viewed HERE.
