COD Information Page
What is Chemical Oxygen Demand?
Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) is an indicative measurement of the amount of oxygen that can be consumed by reactions in a measured solution. It is commonly expressed as mass of oxygen consumed over volume of solution (mg/L). The measurement of COD is widely used in municipal and industrial laboratories to measure the overall organic contamination in wastewater. The contamination level is determined by measuring the equivalent amount of oxygen required to oxidize organic matter in the sample.
Health Risks
High levels of COD in water often correlate with threats to human health including toxic algae blooms, bacteria from organic waste, and seafood contamination. High COD levels affect aquatic organisms as well by causing hypoxia. Hypoxia reduces cell function, disrupts circulatory fluid balance in aquatic species, and can kill individual organisms.
