Chlorine Dioxide MSDS
What is Chlorine Dioxide?
Chlorine Dioxide is a reddish-yellow manufactured gas, with a faint bleach-like odor. When added to water chlorine dioxide forms a chlorite ion which is very reactive. Chlorine dioxide is used as a bleaching agent in paper manufacturing plants and in water purification facilities to make drinking water safe to consume. Liquid chlorine dioxide is a reddish-brown and must be under pressure or cooler temperatures to stay in liquid form. Chlorine dioxide is an oxidizer which may cause or intensify fire. Chlorine dioxide can explode if confined and heated under pressure. Chlorine dioxide is very dangerous, it is toxic if inhaled or swallowed and is a strong irritant.
Chlorine Dioxide Exposure and Health Risks
Chlorine dioxide is a potent irritant to the eyes and skin. Severe burns and tissue damage is likely if direct contact occurs. Irritation to eyes, nose, throat, and airway is common, and excessive exposure can lead to bronchitis, wheezing, and pulmonary edema, which can result in death. Chlorine dioxide is toxic if inhaled or ingested, causing coughing, headaches, labored breathing, and pain. Chlorine dioxide targets the skin, nervous system, eyes, and respiratory system.

Measuring Chlorine Dioxide
Chlorine dioxide can be measured in the air or in water (dissolved) by units of parts per million (ppm). Many of our products have digital communication capabilities for easy monitoring and control. We carry portable, fixed, and dissolved chlorine dioxide monitors and kits, and all of our chlorine dioxide products can be viewed HERE.
