Acetic Acid MSDS

What is Acetic Acid?

Acetic acid is a clear, colorless liquid that is corrosive to metals and tissue. Acetic acid is a simple carboxylic acid. It is an important chemical reagent and is used in the production of plastic soft drink bottles, photographic film, polyvinyl acetate for wood glue, and many synthetic fibers and fabrics. Acetic acid is often used as a household cleaning agent. Acetic acid is a weak acid and is widely used in chemistry laboratories. Acetic acid is a primary component of vinegar as well.

Acetic Acid Exposures and Health Risks

Acetic acid can be inhaled, ingested, and contacted directly. The primary risk is with direct contact, as it is corrosive. It will cause skin and eye burns if contacted directly. Should direct contact occur, flush immediately with water. Vapors of acetic acid can also irritate the eye, nose, throat, and airway. Irritation can cause coughing, bronchitis, and chest pain. In the occurrence of inhalation, remove to fresh air and provide respiratory support as necessary. Acetic acid can be toxic at high exposure. Contact medical assistance immediately if ingested.
